Olive & Frank

Olive & frank was created by Chloe Torpey, born from a desire to build a clothing brand that was empowering, expressive and fun.

The brand launched in 2014 with a small collection of in house designed t-shirts. Social media has helped the brand reach a global audience, and we now have stockists in Japan, China and New Zealand. The growing success of the brand proves that sometimes it’s ok to go your own way and just do you.

I always knew that I wanted to work for myself and started by selling jewellery made by other independent designers before experimenting with a couple of t-shirt designs. After working in various temp jobs and saving up enough money, I decided to try selling the t-shirts online, that’s when the seed that is Olive and Frank was planted. I founded the brand then and it has been an evolution over time to become what it is today.

I run the brand with the help of my sister Gaby and brand assistant Emily, we also have a wonderful team of freelance specialists who help in every area from production to social media.Olive and Frank is based around the ethos of empowerment, that we can do anything we set our minds to, whether that is starting a business, running a marathon, or simply being who we want to be. We create clothes to make you feel good and confident in what you are wearing and our messages aim to encourage positivity and self-belief in everyone.

I don’t think there was a defined point in time where we thought ‘this is totally working’ but more of an instinct or feeling that I followed, it felt right to continue doing what I loved, building the brand and making clothes that empowered people that wore them. The business side of things has naturally grown by listening to our customers and evolving with them.

I’m particularly proud of our tees like Liberte and Be Kind to Your Mind where we have collaborated with independent illustrators and designers. We also have a couple of new designs coming out which have been a labour of love between ourselves and our small partner factory in Portugal, so these tees are extra special in that they have taken a long time to bring to life and they are finally coming out into the world.

We want to continue to build our O&F community and create new designs and new product lines that our customers enjoy wearing. We have a new line of tracksuits coming up that we are really excited about and we would love to do more pop up shops and in person events to connect with our customers face to face (when we’re allowed!).

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself at the beginning?

To believe in yourself, as cheesy as it sounds, I think this is key, just trusting your instinct and going with what feels right.
